MADRID, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The penultimate weekend of the La Liga season set up a dramatic final round of matches, with two European places and two relegation spots still to be decided. Here are four things we learned from the weekend in Spain.

1. European places still up for grabs

Spain's use of head-to-head record rather than overall goal difference to separate teams level on points means both Celta Vigo and Getafe remain in contention for a Europa League place.

Celta is in the stronger position and only needs a point at home to Sevilla, which no longer has anything to play for.

Getafe can secure a place in next season's Conference League with a win at home to Osasuna. But if Getafe fails to win, Rayo Vallecano, Valencia and even Espanyol could still sneak into Europe on what promises to be a tense final day.

2. Relegation battle tighter than race for Europe

The fight to avoid relegation is even closer, with five teams still battling to avoid the final two relegation places.

Sevilla, Alaves, Valencia and Espanyol all secured survival on Sunday, while Levante's 2-0 win over Mallorca lifted the club onto 42 points after a third consecutive victory.

Levante remains level on points with Elche and an Osasuna side that has slipped from European contention into relegation danger in recent weeks.

Mallorca and Girona occupy the bottom two places with 39 and 40 points respectively, meaning both sides must win to have any chance of survival. Mallorca faces already relegated Oviedo at home, while Girona hosts Elche knowing victory would lift the club above its rival and out of the drop zone.

3. Barcelona and Real Madrid maintain focus

FC Barcelona and Real Madrid may have had little left to play for, with Barcelona already crowned champion, but both sides still showed professionalism.

After stumbling away to Alaves in midweek, Barcelona returned to form with a 3-1 win over Real Betis, as Raphinha scored twice and continued his strong return to fitness ahead of the World Cup.

The victory also gave Barcelona fans the chance to bid farewell to Robert Lewandowski after the striker announced last week he would leave the club following four successful seasons.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, endured another difficult week following club president Florentino Perez's controversial press conference, but still claimed a 1-0 win away to Sevilla thanks to Vinicius Junior's composed finish.

With other results confirming Sevilla's survival, the atmosphere at the Sanchez Pizjuan was less tense by fulltime despite the defeat.

4. Emotional farewells for La Liga stalwarts

Sunday also brought several emotional farewells across Spain.

Antoine Griezmann played his final home game for Atletico Madrid, receiving a warm tribute from supporters at the Metropolitano Stadium in recognition of his contribution to the club.

41-year-old Santi Cazorla also announced his retirement, bringing the curtain down on a distinguished career that began and ended with hometown club Oviedo.

Oscar Trejo said goodbye to Rayo Vallecano after nine years at the club, while coach Inigo Perez, who is also set to depart, received a warm reception from supporters.

At Athletic Club, Ernesto Valverde took charge of his final match after 504 games as coach, while defender Inigo Lekue also brought an end to a career spent entirely with the Basque club.
